Swimming Pool
The 20-metre pool is maintained at a comfortable 29 degrees. A roped-off lane dedicated for swimmers separates the more energetic from the leisure bathers, and everyone can enjoy the massage seat built into the pool. The pool has a uniform depth of 1.2 metres - deep enough to swim easily but shallow enough to stand up (for most!). A shallow paddling area caters for the smaller children. Around the pool are loungers for you to relax.

Tropical Shower
Relaxing, warm tropical rain or a chilling Arctic blast - you choose, but be sure to press the right button!

Deluge Shower

The Steam Room
Feel the gentle relaxation of the steam room that will leave you with a great sense of well-being. The hot, steamy atmosphere assists breathing, improve skin and melt any stiffness away. Afterwards, step under the cold deluge shower to be left feeling wonderfully invigorated.

The Sauna
The poolside sauna offers a relaxing and soothing environment.

The Spa Pool
Our spa pool sits next to our main pool, and is ideal for enjoying those much-needed relaxing moments. Let the whirling bubbles caress and soothe your body, relieving tension and dissolving stress.

Physio Therm
The infrared technique relies on heating a small area of the body in order to gradually heat the whole body via the circulatory system. This process improves circulation, stimulates metabolism and detoxification and can help to alleviate musculoskeletal conditions.

History of the Estate

History of The Langdale Estate

17th Century

Woollen Mill

The Estate began life as a small woollen mill where wool from local flocks was processed on machinery driven by the fast-flowing water of the Great Langdale Beck.

1823-1930

Elterwater Gunpowder Works

In 1823 a local entrepreneur with an interest in quarrying saw the potential for the manufacture of gunpowder on the site. The seclusion, natural waterpower and a growing demand from the Lakeland mines and quarries ensured success. Within a few years the Elterwater Gunpowder Works was not only supplying the domestic industry, but also exporting to North America and South Africa.

The gunpowder works closed in 1930, a victim of the depression & the development of more modern explosives, such as dynamite.

1930-1981

Tourism comes to Langdale - The Langdale Estate

A local landowner, recognising the potential of this unique location, bought and developed the site as a holiday resort. By the late 1930s, accommodation consisted of a small hotel, several furnished cottages, dormitories and a guest house. There was also a number of rustic sleeping cabins scattered around the idyllic 35-acre Estate.

1981-1987

The Langdale Partnership

In 1981, when the Estate came up for sale again, it was bought by a group of local businessmen who established the Langdale Partnership. The idea was to create a high-quality time ownership resort in an area of outstanding natural beauty, where second homes are in high demand and short supply. 80 Scandinavian-type lodges were carefully sited over an area of 35 acres and the small hotel was converted into a luxury Hotel & Country Club.

1987-1996

Langdale Leisure Ltd

Sold to Matthew Brown, a northern-based brewing company in 1987, some months later in 1988 the business was acquired by Scottish & Newcastle Breweries who had bought Matthew Brown. In 1996 Langdale was purchased by Langdale Owners plc, whose shareholders are all Langdale timeshare owners, who thus have effective control of the entire resort.

Sustainable Langdale

Sustainable Langdale

The Langdale Estate recognises its responsibility to provide a sustainable destination for visitors, employees and the local community. This responsibility includes minimising our impact on the natural environment whilst providing an excellent guest experience and commercial sustainability.

As a hotel and timeshare resort based in the Lake District, our location brings with it a great opportunity to meet visitors to the area, and everyone is welcome to discuss any aspect of the environmental or corporate social responsibility policy with us during their stay.

We work closely with a number of partners in order to make a positive contribution to the natural environment and local community

The Board of Langdale Leisure Ltd recognise their responsibility to manage the environmental impacts of our activities. We have assessed our activities and identified that our significant environmental impacts include:

  • Energy consumption
  • Waste management
  • Local ecology
  • Water usage

Others – including chemical usage and education

In order to promote good environmental practices, our general environmental policies include:

Identifying the significant environmental impacts of our activities.

Developing suitable objectives, targets and management programmes, applying appropriate operational procedures to minimise our significant environmental impacts during normal, abnormal   and   emergency conditions.

Complying with relevant legislation, regulation and other requirements relating to our significant environmental impacts.

Preventing pollution, minimise our inputs of utilities and resources and the outputs of emissions to the atmosphere, effluents to waters/sewers and wastes to disposal facilities; endeavouring to re-use, recover or recycle materials where practicable.

Ensuring that environmental responsibilities are defined, communicated and understood at all levels within our organisation, and to provide appropriate training where needed.

To ensure that suppliers and contractors understand the Company Policy, and assist them in developing appropriate systems and a responsible approach with regard to environmental issues.

Communicating, co-operating and responding to the views of interested parties, including stakeholders, customers and the general public, on environmental issues, where this is practicable and likely to result in an overall improved environmental performance.

To strive for continual improvement in overall environmental performance.

What we are doing:

  • Energy consumption
  • Energy conservation training for all our colleagues.
  • Use maximum insulation wherever possible.
  • Avoid leaving appliances on stand-by.
  • Installation of individual controls to all radiators.
  • Installation of low energy LED light bulbs wherever possible.
  • Installation of timer light switches wherever possible.
  • Installation of Biomass Heat Solution.
  • Installation of hydro waterwheel.
  • Purchase energy-efficient equipment.
  • Rooms fitted with entry card controlled lighting.
  • Installation of gas optimisers to all main hotel boilers.

Waste management

  • Re-use as much as possible – we have a dispenser system for cleaning products which means we re-use containers.
  • Reduce packaging – we try to purchase products that have a minimum of packaging.
  • Recycling – we have facilities for glass, paper, cardboard, drinks cans, plastic, fluorescent tubes, ink and toner cartridges and batteries.
  • Small electric items and redundant furniture are donated to Impact Housing Association.

Local ecology

  • We support the Man at the Top footpath repair scheme. So far, the Estate has donated over £250,305 and this has been matched by double EU funding
  • We have been awarded the Gold GTBS Award.
  • We participate in the Red Squirrel Watch scheme and are actively controlling the grey squirrel population with outside assistance.
  • We have installed additional bird boxes.
  • We have expanded our wild flower meadow at Elterwater Hall.

Water usage

  • We are working with local contractors to find ways of reducing the amount of leaks from the tarns and waterways on site.
  • We have completed the installation of a hydro waterwheel.
  • We have completed the installation of aerators in all guest bathrooms to reduce the level of water usage.
  • We have installed hippo water-saving devices to cisterns wherever possible.
  • We removed double baths and installed showers.

Others – including chemical usage and education

  • We have carried out an audit of the chemicals we use on site which we use to highlight any practices or purchases that can be altered to reduce the usage of any potential chemicals such as cleaning materials
  • We are sourcing a reliable supply of recycled paper for use in offices and for marketing material. We are trying to find a supply which does not utilize harmful bleaches in its production process. We have moved our print supply to Badger Press, a CBEN Gold accredited company.
  • We encourage our colleagues to car-share wherever possible and support the National Lift share Day campaign.
  • We support local organizations such as the Chapel Stile and Lakes Schools, Langdale First Responders, the  Cumbrian  Wildlife  Trust  and  Nurture Lakeland for whom we are Ambassadors.
  • We try whenever possible to purchase local goods and services as well as Fair Trade and organic produce.
  • By using a UV system for pool disinfectant we have reduced water consumption and chemical usage.

What you can do:

Obviously you are here to enjoy the facilities and the area and most of all to have a great time, but we would be very grateful if you could help us do our bit by following these guidelines:-

  • Help reduce energy consumption by switching off your bedroom lights when the room is empty, closing your curtains in winter to keep heat in the room, and turning down the thermostatic control on the radiator to a comfortable level.
  • Think about water consumption when taking a shower, and don’t wash your hands or clean your teeth under a running tap – put the plug in instead!
  • Let us know if you notice any leaking or dripping taps – they lose a lot more than you think!
  • Help yourself to leaflets of local attractions but don’t take more than you need, and you could even return them after use.
  • Use our recycling facilities – for bottles, paper, cardboard, cans and plastic.
  • Buy local or Fair Trade produce whenever you can.
  • Leave the car behind! Use the local transport. We have walking and bus routes available at Reception – there are great views from all the routes and lots of visitor attractions within easy reach.
  • Bikes are available for hire.
  • Enjoy our beautiful wooded grounds and do a spot of bird watching.
  • You can make a contribution to Nurture Lakeland to help with local conservation projects.
  • Don’t drop litter. Litter can be very harmful to wildlife.

Recycling facilities

Recycling facilities can be found at the main entrance to the Estate, near Reception. Facilities are also available at the other end of the Estate near Brackens Cottage. These include -

  • Glass
  • Paper
  • Plastic
  • Cans
  • Cardboard can be left next to your bin and will be collected half-way through your stay and on departure by the Grounds Team.
