Honister Via Ferrata Xtreme: One of the Most Thrilling Adventures in the Lake District
If you're looking for an adrenaline fuelled adventure in the Lake District, the Honister Via Ferrata Xtreme should be high on your list. Located at Honister Slate Mine on Honister Pass, this unique mountain experience combines scrambling, climbing and high-level obstacles with some of the best panoramic views in Cumbria.
We're always looking for new ways to experience the Lake District, so recently we swapped our desks for helmets and harnesses and headed to Honister to see what all the fuss was about. Safe to say, it didn't disappoint.
The Via Ferrata Xtreme is a guided three-hour adventure that takes participants across the dramatic mountainside above Honister Pass. Rather than following traditional walking routes, you're clipped onto a secure cable system and navigate a series of exposed traverses, climbing sections and exciting obstacles high above the valley below.
From the very start, it was clear this wasn't your average Lake District activity. Every section brought a fresh challenge, from scrambling across rocky terrain to tackling steep climbs and exposed overhangs. As the route progressed, our confidence grew, helped in no small part by the fantastic Honister team, whose encouragement and enthusiasm kept spirits high throughout.
One of the most memorable moments was crossing the famous Burma Bridge, which Honister describes as
"the longest high wire bridge in Europe.”
Suspended high above the landscape, it delivers exactly what you'd expect: excitement, nervous laughter and an incredible sense of achievement once you reach the other side.
Another highlight was the Sky Ladder. Requiring plenty of courage and a willingness to step outside your comfort zone, it's one of those obstacles that looks daunting from afar but leaves you buzzing once you've completed it. Thankfully, the guides were supportive throughout, helping everyone build confidence and enjoy the experience safely.
As we climbed higher, the views became even more spectacular. Standing high above Honister Pass, we were rewarded with stunning 360-degree views across the Lake District fells, making every scramble, climb and obstacle worthwhile. It's one of those rare experiences where the scenery is just as impressive as the adventure itself.
Once back on solid ground, the adrenaline gradually faded and we headed to the onsite café for a well-earned refuel. After three hours of climbing and scrambling, the bread rolls received a unanimous 10/10 from the team and provided the perfect end to an unforgettable day.
