Things to do
The Lake District has so much for everyone to enjoy all year round and the best way to enjoy the views and get around is by boat. Windermere Lake Cruises sail all year on Windermere with a range of boat and journeys to suit all visitors stopping an many locations on Lake Windermere.
A cruise on Windermere is the quintessential way for visitors to experience the stunning scenery surrounding England’s largest lake, including the famous Lakeland fells, wooded shoreline, rolling countryside and the rich diversity of wildlife.
Located in the new UNESCO World Heritage Site, It’s no surprise Windermere Lake Cruises is England’s sixth most popular ‘paid for’ visitor attraction with over 1.6 million passenger journeys every year
Welcoming both groups and FITs, passengers can relax and soak up the majesty of the English Lake District, on historic ‘steamers’ and launches 364 days of the year with scheduled sailings ranging from 30 minute single trips to full day itineraries, which can be combined with other attractions in the rea to create half and full day itineraries. Cruises can also be combined with lunch, dinner or traditional afternoon tea at a tranquil lakeside location. Alternatively, catering can be provided on board and vessels can be hired exclusively for special events and sailings.
Coach parking is available at Bowness and Lakeside with drop off at Ambleside. Guides sail free and there are incentives and complimentary refreshments for both tour leaders and coach drivers at Bowness coach park. Independent visitors can also visit by car or use frequent train/bus connections.
For those wishing to explore the Lake on their own, our range of quiet electric self-drive boats are also available to hire for a maximum of 6 people in each vessel.
The company operates 16 boats, including three historic ‘steamers’ known as MV Tern, MV Swan and MV Teal – the largest vessel ever built for the lake. All have heated indoor cabins where passengers can make the most of an on-board commentary, telling them more about the lake’s fascinating landscape and heritage. There is also a fleet of traditional wooden launches and waterbuses which runs all year round. Information is translated into 17 different languages.
Plus, new for 2020 is the brand new, 300 seat boat, ‘MV Swift’, which will be the first new boat to be launched onto Windermere in more than 80 years.
During the summer, there are also convenient links with other leading tourist attractions including Lakeside and Haverthwaite Steam Railway, Brockhole, Wray Castle and Ferry House for Hill Top. The Lakeland Motor Museum is the perfect all-weather venue for a combined visit, with 30,000 exhibits, including 150 classic cars and motorbikes, plus a gift shop and café.
