Renowned for its extraordinary lakes, rolling fells and breathtaking mountain ranges, the Lake District offers picturesque panoramas across the region. Seeping with natural beauty, charming towns and local cuisine, it comes as no surprise that the area draws visitors into its parameters every year, and this year is no different.
With so much to see and do, it’s a difficult job to narrow down the best places to visit. So, to make your job a little bit easier, we thought we’d let you know our favourite places and activities to the make sure you have the perfect staycation in our beloved home.
Visit one of the many charming towns
Keswick - Surrounded by picturesque peaks; you truly do have a view from every direction. A small but bustling town, Keswick’s character shines through in every aspect. From tempting cafés, to spectacular viewpoints and an abundance of walking shops to pick up some new gear, it offers a fantastic day out.
Grasmere - A popular destination for walkers and staycationers alike, the quaint village holds home to an array of cafés, gentle walks and magical picnic spots. Explore the home of poet William Wordsworth and no trip would be worthwhile without tasting the famous Grasmere Gingerbread.
Windermere - Home to the largest lake in the National Park, Windermere boasts tranquility through its calm waters and mountain views beyond. Hop on one of the popular lake cruises at Windermere Lake Cruises and take in the breathtaking backdrop at a slightly slower pace, or visit the enchanting World of Beatrix Potter for a magical storytelling experience following the well-known tales of Peter Rabbit and his furry friends.
Try something new
SUP - No visit to the Lake District is complete without of course, taking to the water. So, why not try stand-up paddle boarding? Whether you’re a complete beginner or paddleboard pro, SUP is the best way to soak up the views firsthand, and of course, have some fun whilst doing so.
Mountain Biking - For something a bit more adventurous for the adrenaline junkies out there, the Lake District is home to some of the most challenging, and scenic, Mountain Biking routes. Explore the fells with Biketreks Grizedale to get a mountain bike experience with views like no other.
Alpaca and Llama Walking – It’s a given that a vast amount of people visit the Lake District with the hope of getting out on the fells. But, have you ever considered taking a llama or alpaca with you? Alpacaly Ever After have a plenty of Peruvian pals to join you on your walks, whether that be a gentle stroll to the shores of Derwentwater or a hike up Catbells, they offer a range of walks so that you get to enjoy the view, oh and of course, take a cute picture with your walking buddy to upload to the ‘gram.
Explore the picturesque landscapes
Elter Water - For all of those who come to the lakes to admire them at lower level, Elter Water offers incomparable views. Starting from Elterwater village, make your way around the popular footpath surrounding the lake and take in the scenic views, including our personal favourite of the Langdale Pikes.
Loughrigg Fell - With one of the best views the Lake District has to offer, this charming fell looks out over Grasmere and beyond. A medium level walk, Loughrigg Fell is ideal for those wanting to get out on the fells in return for stunning views.
Scafell Pike – Feeling adventurous? Why not tackle the highest mountain in England whilst you’re here? 978m above sea level, Scafell Pike is part of the National Three Peak Challenge and one of the most gruelling walks in the UK. Accessible from both Wasdale and Seathwaite, people travel from all over the nation to tick it off their bucket list. With unreal views from the get go, even your water stops are mesmerising.
Try the local cuisine
Wainwrights’ Inn - Embracing the very best of local Cumbrian produce, Wainwrights’ Inn is the very best place to tuck into some grub after a day on the fells. From traditional pub classics, to tasty contemporary dishes, and a range of local ales, beers and spirits, you can get the full Lakeland culinary experience all in the comfort of its cosy interior.
Chester’s by the River – Fresh and homemade with a lot of love, Chester’s by the River offers the tastiest vegetarian food. Located on the beautiful River Brathay, relax with your morning coffee or tuck into something scrumptious after a gentle walk around Elter Water.
Crafty Baa - The Lakes are full of quirky and unique places to visit, including its range of bars. One of our favourites is most certainly Crafty Baa. It’s alternative interior, extensive beverage selection, and unmatched charm are all reasons as to why it is a must when visiting the Lake District. With a bar in Windermere and a new addition in Keswick, it’s the perfect place to have a tipple after a day of exploring or to add to the date night itinerary.
