Greener (Black) Friday
Black Friday: Profitable for businesses, but not for the planet
/ 24th November 2021 /
One of the biggest shopping days of the year, Black Friday is anticipated by many ahead of Christmas. With crowds of people waiting to grab a bargain, most businesses slash their prices, and it didn’t take long for Black Friday to become a token of overconsumption. The attractive discounts become hard for all of us to resist, resulting in excessive and compulsive consumption of products we don't need.
In recent years, the increasing negative impacts Black Friday is having upon our planet has become apparent, and many people have been striving for change. Green Friday has become a prominent movement which disputes the irresponsible vast consumption that naturally follows with Black Friday, along with encouraging all of us to act and shop sustainably.
”It's estimated that Black Friday in the UK alone produces 429,000 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions each year.” - money.co.uk
We're doing things a little different this year
Here at Langdale, we’re keen to do our bit. That’s why this year, we’re not having a sale, we’re not slashing prices to encourage purchases, but we’re prioritising the right things.
For every Greener Black Friday Gift Voucher bought, we will plant 2 metres of native hedgerow in partnership with Lake District Foundation, a local organisation who are dedicated to sustainable development across the Lake District.
Launched by the Lake District Foundation in April, a special fund was produced for the protection and creation of native hedgerows in Cumbria. The Real Hedge Fund is made up of donations from businesses, visitors and residents who love the Lake District and want to help the cause of protecting native hedgerows and the wildlife that depends on them.
Hedgerows are Britain’s biggest nature reserve, providing home, shelter and food for a range of native wildlife. Along with providing essential refuge for wildlife, they also benefit the environment by cleaning our air, capturing carbon and reducing flooding. This is why it is so important that we look after them, not only in the local area but across the nation.
What you can do
We know that it’s almost impossible to turn down the bargains, but here’s a few things that you can do to help and join us in helping the planet this Black Friday!
Mindful Shopping – Be more mindful of what you’re buying and if you really need it.
Shop Local – This is the easiest way to reduce the carbon footprint of our purchases, along with supporting small businesses. Try defer away from the big corporate brands and try something new.
Recycle – opt for products made of recycled materials, this prevents as much waste ending up in landfill.
