Then it Rained - 17th October 2008
The rain came as I drove home in the cold grey
light of dusk low cloud shrouding the high fells, the smell of
open fires hanging in the late autumnal evening.
As I drove the colours erupted from around each bend flashes of
red, bursts of gold and ambers as though you were watching natures
very own firework spectacular. The high point of this amazing display
was a resplendent vibrant vermillion sycamore contrasted against
a bank of yellow from a supporting cast of other trees. Momentarily,
I wonder how our own firework display in November will compare.
I stopped briefly to take in the scene regretting that for once
my camera was sitting idly in the hall way at home. As I neared
home the cloud had lifted slightly although the fingers of smoke
from the fires of the village still appeared to have hold of it
preventing it rising higher and then it rained… and rained… and
rained.
This morning the clouds had given way, exhausted or bored with
their efforts. The early morning winter sun had bathed the distant
fells in a beautiful crisp light. We plough great furrows through
pools of water on the road; testament to the clouds efforts at
leaving all their contents behind.
At Langdale the whole estate was alive with birds in song. The
chatter of the Blackbird’s gossip competing with Robins singing
in the bright sunlight; a minute Goldcrest was bobbing and flitting
around our offices. The whole scene an idyllic contrast to the
previous evening and that lies the beauty of the Lake District.
