Environmental Achievements

We have achieved an enormous amount over a relatively short period of time. Our Environmental Management System, which was implemented with a great deal of support from Cben, has provided us with a framework and the direction required in order to implement and action our environmental objectives. There are many small changes, for example, installing hippos into cisterns and providing plastic re-cycling which will continue to impact in the long term as well as larger projects such as the installation of the biomass boiler and the purchase of an on site incinerator which impact in the short term and for the future.

Specific benefits as a result of environmental practice (for the year ending May 2008) include the following:-
We have reduced our consumption of utilities

• Electricity 51,000kw
• LPG 42500ltr
• Water 3000m³

We have also diverted 92.5tonnes of waste form landfill, this has either been recycled or donated to local charities such as Impact Housing.

Our efforts to manage our environmental impact have not gone unnoticed by outside organisations.

We are winners of the Silver Excellence Award and Gold Award for Environmental Practice through the Cumbria Business Enterprise Network (Cben), the John Dunning Best Business Award 2007, a Biodiversity Award from the Wildlife Trust (2007) and finalists in Cumbria Tourism’s Sustainable Hotel award. This year we have been nominated for The Cateys 2008.
